Learn about the English language requirements for studying at Deakin University and how you can meet them.
To enrol in a Deakin degree, you will need to be able to read, speak, write and listen in English at a level that allows you to fully engage in your coursework. This level of English also enables you to successfully live and work in Australia while you study.
English language proficiency requirements are aligned to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Full details of the minimum criteria and how to meet them can be found in the Deakin Policy Library.
To meet these requirements, you will need to provide evidence of one of the following:
You will need to obtain the required scores on a recognised English language test, such as IELTS, Pearson or equivalent. The minimum level for undergraduate degrees is 6.0 IELTS (CEFR B2). For postgraduate coursework degrees, the minimum is IELTS 6.5 (CEFR C1).
Please note that these are the minimum for admission to Deakin. Some courses will have higher requirements. The specific requirements for each course are available in the Entry requirements section of the course page.
Recent completion of high school (secondary) or previous university studies taught in English at an approved provider can meet the requirements.
If you have lived and worked in an English-speaking country for a minimum of five years, you may meet Deakin's minimum English requirements. This is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Successful completion of DUELI’s English for Academic Purposes can provide you with the minimum English language requirements for most Deakin degrees.
Along with on-campus and online course work, DUELI facilitates informal, independent learning. Students can participate in extracurricular activities, such as discussion groups and watching movies in English.
